One in four patients gets unnecessary care.
Nearly a quarter of all patients receive treatment that is unnecessary, according to a recent report from the Washington Health Alliance (WHA). Just as troubling, over half of all commonly overused services evaluated were “low-value”—i.e., wasteful or likely to be wasteful.
Get the SummaryThe United States spends more on healthcare than any other country—nearly 18% of GDP. An October 2019 JAMA study estimates that between 20% and 25% of that spending is wasteful.1 Numerous factors contribute to waste, but among them is the continued provision of unnecessary medications, tests, and procedures, as the WHA report confirms.
